Faced with the tragedy that is unfolding in Afghanistan, in these hours more precisely around the Kabul airport, we are all guilty in different ways. First of all, those who invented, wanted, conducted and lost war. Starting with those who, from Washington, armed the Taliban, their future adversaries, against the then government installed by the Soviet Union, and then unleashed a military intervention that lasted twenty years, by virtue of art. 5 of NATO.

The second, to favor a timely negotiating initiative by the UN, which supports a non-bloody management of the powers now acquired and established in Afghanistan, starting from what they have stated. Instead, there is a window of opportunity due to the fact that all permanent members of the Security Council, without exception - not even Russia and, above all, China - have to deal with large internal minorities of Muslim faith and culture, variously influenced by what takes place in that country. The third, more specifically referring to Italy and other NATO member countries, is to monitor, where possible, to prevent the United States from resuming bombings, provocations, support, and the inflation of violent activities in that territory, perhaps with the intent to fuel a new bipolar opposition with China.
